I've read that ephedrine is one of the ingredients they use to make crystal meth. By itself, is ephedrine a hard drug to overcome? Any suggestions as to how to curb cravings or get a similar 'high' without doing another drug? What are the chances someone could stop taking it on their own? Thank you for any replies.

I have similar issues. When I was younger it was caffeine and caffeine pills (Vivarin) and then I found Mini-thins (LOTS of Ephedrine). I never did any hard drugs until my husband talked me into it a few years ago. He has been a Meth addict for most of his life. When I tried it, I loved it. I know that the problem is that my body doesn't produce (or maybe just doesn't absorb) enough Seratonin, and that I don't have normal moods like most people. Anything that helps me make or absorb more Seratonin makes me feel "normal", "okay", "accepted", etc. While it IS true that I am a very cool person to be around when I'm high (on anything Seratonin related), it's kind of a sad way to live. I didn't do the Meth for long, just a few times in fact, but I missed it maybe too much. I had gotten rid of the pills years ago, but still had a raging caffeine addiction. I began taking Zoloft, which, when taken regularly and as prescribed (no missed doses, no "oh, I'm okay now", etc.) makes me feel closer to normal. Maybe not quite there, but... close. I wanted to see if I could go all the way, so I quit caffeine cold turkey this year. The first few days are always the hardest. Headaches, a little shaky, muffled feeling in head, etc., and I went for 4 1/2 months. I was calmer, the hard tissues in my breasts went away, and I spent A LOT less money on beverages (I was drinking A LOT of water). I eventually decided, however, that it was not worth it. My quality of life just was not what it was with caffeine, I was not as happy, and I could not work as intensely or as long as I could before. After that 4 1/2 months, I made an informed, conscientious, deliberate decision to live my life addicted to caffeine. My point is this: ephedrine is very addictive, much more so than caffeine. But, my question is this: do you WANT to not live addicted to it? Yes, it's hard to overcome, but you CAN do it if you decide to. Just know the facts, prepare yourself for a few days of feeling yucky, drink LOTS and LOTS of water, and find other drinks that you like. If you're okay with caffeine, just not ephedra, drink plenty of Coke, if you want to eliminate stimulants from your life entirely, get a variety of fruit juices. Hi Rose....

My niece was addicted to this drug when it was being sold over the counter...she is anorexic.
I would definitely seek some help with this issue...
Let us know what you decide...
it is not easy to let go of any substance if it puts you in a different space and place in your being.....something is missing. Possibly chemical imbalance like Stewie said.
Prayers w/you
Godbless
Peggy

Adverse effects of ephedrine include: death, heart attacks, strokes, seizures, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, irregular heartbeat and palpitations, restlessness, insomnia, psychosis, memory loss and muscle injury. Serious thermogenic effects, such as heat stroke, are caused by ephedrine’s ability to increase body temperature; this effect is intensified by caffeine. Ephedrine should never be used by someone with hypertension, diabetes, thyroid disease or an enlarged prostate, taking antidepressant medications or breast feeding. Adverse effects do not always depend on the dose consumed.
